I'm assuming it would be the same as the 1994 Ford EXPLORER transfer case ( MERCON automatic transmission fluid ) I know that's what my 1995 Ford Explorer uses

I'm not a mechanic / technician but the transmission for a 4x4 has a different tailpiece on it so the transfer case can be bolted to it
According to the 2004 Ford Ranger Owner Guide : ( 1.25 U.S. quarts of Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is used in the transfer case ) Motorcraft MERCON automatic transmission fluid is also used in the 5 speed manual transmission , approximately 2.8 U.S. quarts
The transfer case is attached to the Transmission.
Possible, if you switch tailhousings. the transfer case takes a different tailhousing then a 4X2
