Yellow Pages are most useful for capturing people who have already made a decision to buy. For this reason they work best for contractors like plumbers, locksmiths etc; where the buyer has an immediate need.
You may be referring to a series of ads featuring actor and Saturday Night Live alumnus Jon Lovitz. They were produced by the ad agency The Martin Agency, and featured Lovitz as the "man who wrote the Yellow Pages."
Assume now the role of sales manager for LIFE and write a letter to go along with your brochure "How an Ad Comes to Life." It describes step by step how an ad promoting Birdsview frozen foods was developed from its original suggested form to the finished four-color, full-page appearance in a recent issue. The mailing goes to college teachers of advertising.
Ads exist for one reason and one reason only, to influence people in some way, whether that is to influence them to buy or to influence them to your point of view. A bad ad is one that does not get the response that you desire. If you want more people to buy your product and it doesn't happen then the ad is bad. If you want to drive people to a web site and it doesn't happen then the ad is bad. One ad can be good and it can also be bad. It could be that you use the same ad in two different publications, in one it gets the response you desire in the other it doesn't. So the ad is good in one set of circumstances but bad in another. You could say here that the ad placement choice was bad and not the ad itself. It should have either been a different ad for that publication or that publication should not have been used.

The cost to advertise in Motor Trend magazine will depend on where in the magazine you want your ad to be, and how big the ad will be. A full page four color ad will run $197,340. A full page black and white ad will run $117, 465.
Fold a page in half and then in half again. Unfold it. One square is one quarter page. As for the design, color, font, etc, that depends on you and the owner of the publication you want the ad published in.
