Bald eagle is a common noun, just like cat or dog. It doesn't have to be capitalized.

Tuesday May 26

I hope everyone had a nice long weekend. I would like to go over three things: 1) Communication 2) Where we've been and 3) This week and next.

Communication. Emailing is great. Keep it up. If you have a question, aren't sure about a grade or assignment then email is fine. Thank you everyone who is keeping the communication going. You can also message me in Hangouts. Class attendance, of course, isn't mandatory but I have been giving extra credit for attendance: 2 points to attend, an additional 5 if you participate. These points go in the extra credit bank. There is often a delay between submitting something and seeing the result in PowerSchool. If you submit DENS for example and you are in the first class I look at you may see the results right away. If you are in the 4th class it may take awhile. I can always see the date you submitted, so if you submit something on the 26th for something due on the 26th, but I don't read it till the 30th, of course it's not late. I'm being much more flexible about late dates. If something is well done and a few days late there is no penalty. People are losing some credit for being over a week late and of course for partial completion, poor effort etc. Remember to submit your work in a shared Google doc, NOT through Classroom.

Where we've been. When we were in school, at least once a week I would ask you to look back on what we had done and where we are going. In the first couple weeks after March 30 we did some short readings, writings and reflections on the world we live in. Then was the big project of the argumentative essay on whether the world is the way it is because of the way we see it--- or not. Then we read the Anchor Set poem by Richard Blanco and the three assignments associated with that. Then we looked at the writer Gabriel Garcia Marquez and the literary technique of magical realism, along with three related assignments. And finally we've been working on reading an informational text and summarizing it.

This week and next. We'll be finishing summarizing over the next couple days. Last week you had to read an article and write in a coherent paragraph the most important points in the article. You had to make sure you didn't leave out anything important, or include something better left out. It had to be a paragraph where each point was well connected, so the paragraph has transitions and isn't just a list. If you didn't submit the paragraph on Navajo Nation it's fine to submit today. Please review the packet How to Write a Summary that I posted a week ago. Today I want you to LISTEN to a news article (or watch it) rather than read it. It's linked below. First, take notes while you're listening. Replay several times if you need to. Turn your notes into a list, then turn your list into a summary. I'll be asking in class on Thursday if this is easier or more difficult than reading the article. I'll also ask how many times you had to replay it. You can read the transcript for spellings, but I want you to give listening/watching a chance and decide what's easier or harder about listening. This is due Thursday (or Fri if you need it) This is the only written work to submit this week. Wed, Thurs and Fri we'll be taking a look at some Famous Speeches by people like Steve Jobs and JK Rowling and others. Then we'll look at what goes into a good speech. Then next week you'll work on writing a speech.
