I was struck by lightning about 10 years ago while swimming in a stream with my girlfriend. It was a very hot summer day in July and we had driven out to a stream to go swimming. The stream consisted of several waterfalls that descended down over a cliff. We were swimming under one of the waterfalls when the sky became overcast and we could hear thunder in the distance. We didn`t think much of it at first and continued to swim in the rain until we could see lightning and hear thunder becoming uncomfortably near.
The onset of the storm happened quite rapidly and before we knew it we were scrambling to get out of the water. My friend had already gotten out of the water and was a few meters up the path. My girlfriend and I were climbing out of the water (I was up to my waist and she was up to her chest- I was holding her hand to help her up.) We were struck and we both sort of blacked out for a few seconds. It felt like crash cymbals had been smashed with a hammer through every inch of my body ( I know that sounds like nonsense). I thought I had died and felt like I was falling. When I regained consciousness we were both leaning against each other against a rock, still in the water. We climbed out and began to run towards the truck. I thought I got struck again while running, but my doctor told me later that it was just my nervous system reacting to the shock.
My girlfriend and I could not sleep for days and I was twitching and trembling for almost a week, but I felt amazing and renewed. I was grateful to be alive and the feeling has stayed with me and given me a lot of conviction and faith in my intuition. I have no regrets.
