The stomach is a generic term for the system that digests food. The small intestine is a part of that system
Stomach and both samll and larrge intestines. they break down and well....digest the food.
your esophagus and small intestine are attached to your stomach.
I know that it takes about 8 hours to get through both the stomach and the small intestine. And most digestion occurs in the small intestine. So, probably about 2-3 hours. Remember, the stomach only has the enzyme to digest proteins, so why on earth would a lot of digestion occur in it?
Directly after the stomach, food enters the duodenum, which is the first part of the small intestine.
Why yes of course
The stomach and small intestine both help with digestion. However, the stomach breaks down the food with acids and is mostly a large cavity, while the small intestine absorbs the nutrients and is a long winding path.
Stomach
Stomach, Small intestine, and colon
chemical digestion takes place in the small intestine large intestine, mouth and stomach. Nutrients are absorbed in the small intestine and minerals in the large intestine.
both rugae and villi are specialized "folds". the rugae allow your stomach to expand when you eat (like a balloon) and the villi increase the surface area in your small intestine for nutrient absorption
Protein is digested both in the stomach (by pepsin and trypsin) and in the small intestine.
The stomach leads into the first part of the small intestine, which is called the duodenum. The pancreas also leads into the duodenum, by a duct (tube) called the pancreatic duct. So both connect to the small intestine, but the stomach does not connect to the pancreas. For a diagram see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pancreas
