When a blood vessel ruptures, clotting helps prevent further blood loss. A sufficient amount of calcium ions helps in the conversion of prothrombin to thrombin. In turn, thrombin converts fibrinogen to fibrin that forms a mesh that traps platelets to make a clot.

  • calcium plays very important role in blood clotting.if it is not present then clotting disorders occurs.i will explain how Ca involved.generally there are 13 factors for clotting.1.fibrinogen,2. prothrombin ,3.tissue factor,4.calcium,5.proaccelerin,6.accelerin,7.proconvertin,8.anti haemophilic favtor,9.christmas factor,10.stuart_power factor,11.plasma thromboplastin antecedent,12.hagemen factor,13.laki_lorands factor.blood clot occurs in 2 pathways.1.intrinsic,2.extrinsic.

intrinsic

  • hagemen factor converts to active hagemen in presence of hmwk and kiminogen.
  • this activated one in presence of ca ions and hmwk converts 11th factor to activated activated 11th.
  • this activated 11th converts 9th factor to act9th in presence of ca ions.
  • again this act9thconverts 8th to act8th in presence of ca only.
  • agian this act8th converts 10th to act10th in presence of ca only.

like this ca gets involced in every each conversions steps and plays imp role in clotting.in abs of this no activaton of factors occurs and lead to disorders.

similarily ca takes place in extrinsic mechanisms also.

thus calcium also plays important role in muscle contraction, transmission of impulse, blood clotting, etc

Calcium, vit D and vit K are important in the blood clotting cascade. Calcium and Vit K are cofactors and are directly needed to convert certain proteins into functioning clotting factors. Vit D is needed for Calcium absorption.

Blood cell required for the clotting process?

The healing effect of blood clotting of surface wounds comes as a result of blood chemistry and its solids. The solids themselves are cell fragments known as platelets. The clotting action is aided by plasma clotting factors.

Why are calcium good for clotting?

calcium act as enzyme activators in clotting without it either there would be no clotting or delayed clotting

How does calcium helps in blood clotting?

Calcium works together with vitamin K and a protein called fibrinogen in the clotting cascade. Without adequate levels of calcium and vitamin K, blood will take longer to clot, and if both nutrients are missing you might bleed to death. Most people gain enough calcium and vitamin K from their diets, but in some cases supplements may be prescribed.
