Plus, the rate of a reaction depends on its nature, not just whether oxygen or a halogen reacts. when the halogens do react faster, this is because they only need one electron to have a stable configuration, whereas oxygen needs two.
Metals in the reactivity series from aluminium to copper react with oxygen in the air to form the metal oxide. Aluminium and Zinc reacts very quickly, Iron reacts slowly at room temperature. I don't know whether the main question is why iron rustsor why does it rust slowly but i will answer bothiron rusts in air because air contains oxygen and water.and for rusting to occur, you NEED both oxygen and water..why it rusts slowly because , although air has an abundance of oxygen (~30%) water does not (~1%) and that is why it rusts slowly. because there is lesser water in the air to react with the iron and oxygen.

Silver does not combust as it is not a very reactive metal. It corrodes slowly by reacting with oxygen in the atmosphere.
