Soot is oily ash. (The oil id from the burned wax.) Use the product Goo Gone on it, and it should come clean.
First try a mild solvent like Goo-Gone or Goof Off. If they don't do it, try gentle scrubbing with acetone or lacquer thinner if the clothing is strong.
Goo-Gone.
Try Goo Be Gone! It does leave a grease stain but it's much better than a white out stain and I'm sure there's a way to get the greese stain out. I did research and found out that the four best-bets for getting white out out of cloth are (in this order): 1) Goo Be Gone; 2) W-D 40; 3) rubbing alcohol; and finally 4) nail polish remover. Try them out and see what works! :-)

Use the product called goo gone it cleans up most stains, spots, etc and will not harm the paint on your walls.
When used in small amounts I do not think so. I can't see it discoloring clothes at least; since even on the bottles it claims to be used as a stain/grease fighter. I don't think they could market it as such, if it caused fabric discoloration. Though, definitely recommend washing the laundered item separately as it is a form of citrus oil.
I just read on another site, that Goo Gone, a product at the hardware store to remove greasy stuff. haven't tried it yet.
