If I had been asked this question 30 years ago I would have said no it did make much difference. But things have changed and today I think it does. The political parties today have two different views of the world and this shows in how they approach governmental policy. One of the problems with both parties is that they take too much money from large corporations and groups and this gives these groups and people too much power to decide policy. I think that is what is happening with health care. George Washington didn't think political parties was a good idea and tried to discourage them. I think he may have been right. I personally think we need a new third party to break up the stalemate that seems to have the two parties not doing much much argue.
Usually the government is under the control of a political party or a coalition of political party's. If your party does not have control of the government but does have seats in the parliament or senate then it is an opposition party. That is a party that opposes the government. The official opposition is the party with the second most seats in the house of commons.
