No more than other children but the training can take significantly longer because autistic children can only cope with one behavioral change at a time. See the related link for more information.
It depends on their ability level.
Having Aspergers Syndrome myself I know a good deal about autism as I researched this for a year after I was Diagnosed when I was 18.
There are many different types of Autistic Spectrum Disorders (ASD for short), each has a different level of functional ability. These range from Low, Medium and High. Lucky for me I am at the High end of the spectrum mostly.
If the child has Low Functioning Autism but no sensory issues than potty training can start any time you like, however f the child does have sensory issues than those will need to be resolved so that the child can tell when he is wet or dirty and the difference between urine and feces. The child will also need to be able to interpret the feelings of fullness that come from the bladder and bowel, before potty training can start. This will set potty training back at least 4 years. As always with children wait till the child is ready and starts to ask for diaper changes, shows signs of wanting to use the potty and discomfort at being dirty.
If the child has Medium Functioning Autism Follow the same instructions as above. However with Medium Functioning Autism Sensory issues take no more than 2 years to resolve.
This problem rarely crops up in a child with High Functioning Autism if the child does have this problem and has High Functioning Autism I would suggest you see the following people; a Psychotherapist, your GP and whoever it is that is treating your child for the Autism. If you do not have some one treating your child for the Autism than a Pediatric Neurologist will do.
P.S.
It would be preferable if you could see all three of these people together!
About 20-30% of autistic kids are never successfully toilet trained, but most kids on the spectrum are adaptable. They tend to learn much slower than most kids, but patience is required. Sensory therapy may also be beneficial to help them succeed. Autistic kids tend to like soft things, and enjoy the comfort of a diaper and baby powder on their behinds. Try doing something to make the diaper feel less comfortable, and see if that will help; just remember, there are no guarantees.
In some ways it does. Because it depends how long you wait. Potty training an autistic child is a very difficult task because many autistic individuals are not use to change. It does involve with sensory issues. An autistic child might learn the early skills of potty training and eventually get use to it. For some autistic children, if some parents allow the toilet training habits to be delayed longer, an autistic child might grow up into never getting use to toilet trained habits.
Some Autistic children can have bathroom issues - not all.
Many Autistic children struggle to use the bathroom at first, this may be associated with executive dysfunction - a child may understand when they need to use the bathroom* and how to use the bathroom, but may struggle to actually carry out the task because the brain struggles to put the thoughts into action. * Some Autistic children may not be able to easily identify when they need the bathroom, it's common to have a disconnect between Autistic people and their own bodies.
More severely effected Autistic people may always have bathroom issues, but most don't.
You can potty train a stubborn child by bribing them. You could bribe the stubborn child with food or toys for example.
You can start trying to potty train your child by about 2 yrs old. The child should be completely trained about 2 1/2 years of age.
Most children are ready to be potty trained between 22 and 30 months of age but every child is different.
A fenced area and a Doggie Door.
My son is 42 now, but I still remember potty training him. I used a reward system. I had to make sure that he wanted the reward. For him, it was m & m s. First, he got an m & m for sitting on the potty for a short time, then longer and longer. Finally he peed when he was on the chair. Great cheers!! Lots of m & m s. Then the rewards got bigger and harder to get. For him, listening to a new record when he was successful. It took a long time and takes great patience. You have to start small: maybe just ten seconds on the potty. But it worked! I used the same system on my second son, who wasn't autistic, and it worked with him, too.
some people do.
My cousin used the method to have her son squeeze her finger while he was 'going number two'. He was very difficult to potty train, and this method seemed to work best.
Every child is different but most of them are ready when they are around 22-30 months old.
There is no easy way to do this as every child is different. Girls are generally easier to train than boys. Most children are potty trained by the time they reach four years of age, but it is not uncommon for them to be trained as early as two.
A child should be potty trained at the age of 2 so therefore if your child is still wetting themselves at age 12 then maybe you should potty train again
