∙ 13y agoWe need to breathe air to keep our blood pumping around our bodies. We can live without food for days. We don't even need water for quite a long time- although those would cause dehydration and starvation.
But a sudden cutoff of air would mean your blood stops flowing, and what makes blood flow? Your heart. So basically It keeps our organs running.

- for anaerobic cells it actually increases their growth rate, as oxygen is toxic to them
- for aerobic cells they can usually fallback on anaerobic fermentation for a short period of time, but yes sustained lack of oxygen will eventually kill them
