Action of the diaphragm causes healthy lungs to inflate in whole like a balloon.
Doctors have said that the average person does not breath properly, thereby not filling our lungs with sufficient air to help purify our blood. We should do daily exercises of deep beathing or get into the habit of breathing more deeply than we do.

Your lungs themselves do not inflate/deflate. The diaphragm and intercostal muscles contract and expand the chest cavity. This expansion lowers the pressure in the chest cavity below the outside air pressure causing air to flow in through the airways and inflate the lungs.

The lungs inflate part by part. The lungs inflate when the diaphragm is pulled down. The intercostal muscles push out, which causes the chest and lungs to expand and to create a vacuum.
