Medusa was a gorgon. Once a beautiful maiden she was turned into a hideous monster by Athena for claiming to be the equal of the goddess in beauty. Her hair was changed to writhing serpents and her face became so horrible that all who looked upon her were turned to stone. Perseus cut off her head using a shield so that he would not see her face and gave it to Athena who used it on her shield.
