"Mold" are microscopic fungi that travel through air, water or are carried by bugs. They live and grow by preference on warm and moist surfaces, and fruit kept in the sun or a warm room gives mold cells just the right level of heat, moisture and nutrients. Keeping apples cool and dry will keep them from molding much longer.
