Best Answer

natural gas emits (in parts per billion) :

carbon dioxide - 117000

carbon monoxide -40

nitrogen oxides-92

sulfur dioxide-1

particulates-7

Mercury-0.000000

all the above values are less than those of the other fossil fuels like coal oil etc. therefore natural gas is the cleanest fossil fuel and it can be used to reduce the emission of pollutants in the atmosphere. burning of natural gas in the place of other fossil fuels emits fewer harmful pollutants. so it can be said that we can use natural gas to reduce pollution

If however, you are referring to the creation of CO2 - green house gases during combustion, then the burning of natural gas (natural gas is essentially CH4) produces 1 molecule of CO2 for every molecule of CH4 consumed.

This would make the emission of CO2 in parts per billion

carbon dioxide - 1,000,000,000 and not the misleading 117000 given above

Another factor to consider is incidental and accidental releases of methane during extraction and transportation of natural gas. Studies have shown that this nearly doubles the carbon footprint of natural gas since methane is approximately 24 times as effective as a greenhouse gas as is CO2. This factor can eliminate the advantage of natural gas over coal and oil in terms of greenhouse gas emissions.
