Where should you set the timing on a 1985 Chevy 2.8 v6 with a aftermarket webber carb and no emissions?

Advance the distributor until you hear pinging under a load, then back off until the pinging stops.

Where should the timing be at on a 383 stroker motor with vacum advance?

Advance the distributor until the engine pings then back off to the point the engine stops pinging, tighten the distributor. This will require driving a few test runs.

Are all nic's pingable?

Nope ! Not all nics are pingable. It may also happen the same nic is not pinging , Which was pinging earlier. Nope ! Not all nics are pingable. It may also happen the same nic is not pinging , Which was pinging earlier.

Can a bad distributor cap cause pinging in a vehicle?

Yes, if the corrosion builds thick enough, the armature will make contact a few degrees early. Can also cause odd backfiring, bad cold-weather driving, and fouled plugs.

What is pinging sound?

It is a sound that goes 'ping!'

Will pinging hurt a car engine?

Do you need premium fuel in a 1991 Lincoln mark 7?

It calls for running premium fuel but if you bump the timing back a little. What I did with mine was I ran the tank almost empty and filled it up with regular fuel, then I loosened up the distributor bolt and turn the distributor till the RPM dropped about 50 RPM. What you are looking for is no pinging under heavy exceloration. Or have someone get in the car hold the brake down tight and rev the engine up to around 2000 RPM, while you find that spot were it doesn't ping? I rotate the distributor just till the ping goes away. This is called power timing. We used to do this in racing to find the maximum amount timing to run. After you do this don't expect it to have the performance it used to have. Pinging in an engine over a long period of time can destroy the engine in a very short time... The pinging you here is actually the ingnition trying to fire and run the engine backwards. Rods could break and go through the block and oil pan...

What would cause pinging in a 2002 Trail Blazer?

Pinging, knocking and detonation are all terms for a condition known as "pre-ignition,". That means some of the gas and air mixture is igniting in the cylinder before it's supposed to. And when that extra flame front crashes into the normal flame front (created by the spark plug), you hear a noise, and that noise is pinging. Pinging is something you want to avoid if possible. Engine damage can occur if pinging is severe. Pinging is caused by using too low an octane fuel. Use what is recommended in your owners manual. An engine out of time will also ping, so have the timing checked. Carbon buildup will also cause pinging. A product called Seafoam injected through the intake as outlined in the instructions on the can will help remove carbon and stop pinging. A defective EGR valve is another cause, and also overheating. So replace the thermostat and flush the cooling system.

What is a knock sensor for?

It senses preignition or pinging and adjust ignition and sometimes fuel/air to prevent it. Pinging is the sound you get when driving a standard up a hill in to tall of a gear

Could it be a bad EGR valve if your 1998 Sierra hesitates under partial load and you have changed the air cleaner spark plugs and wires?

No, a bad EGR valve would cause pinging at driving speeds or stalling at idle. Have you checked the distributor cap? Fuel filter?

Recommended fuel octane 1993 ford E-350 460 ci?

I put regular 87 octane in mine. If yours is knocking or pinging with 87 your timing might be advanced too far. I had to change my distributor because the vacuum advance was advancing it too much.
