As with any specialist job experience is key. Having a Dog is not a necessity but it will sure help you to reach your desired goal a hell of a lot faster, whether this is to be a uniformed dog handler (Services) or to be a competition handler.

Having Previous experience with any animal handling job is sensible as it makes you more comfortable and skilled when handling the animal. You wouldn't get into a Ferrari and drive at 100Mph when you've never driven a car before its the same with dogs the more experience you have the better you become.

Any other questions you may have feel free to message me with your queries i was a police dog handler for 20 years and have now moved into competition handling.

Hope this helped,

James

Where do guide dogs live?

They live with their blind handler, in their home.

Are service dogs allowed in buffet lines?

Yes. A valid service dog may accompany their handler anywhere the handler is allowed to go. The dog should be on it's best behavior. Service Dogs are not allowed to smell food, graze on the floor or poke their head/nose above the table top. In a buffet line, the dog should just walk with the handler, usually on the side of the handler away from the buffet table. This places the handler between the dog and the counter.

Do guide dogs park when it's snowing?

This question: "Do guide dogs park when it's snowing," doesn't make much sense as asked. Are you wondering if Guide Dogs "bark" when it snows--to alert their handler, letting them know that snow is falling? If this is your question, the answer is: No they don't alert their handler to the fact that it is snowing.

Where can you get the training in order to become a dog trainer or handler?

Anyone can call themselves a dog trainer. All you really need is years of experience with your own dogs to be seen as 'qualified'. However, buisness will be harder if you don't join a dog training club/collage to get an actual certificate. These dog trainer schools are found almost everywhere, most of which are online courses.

How do hearing dogs hear for the hearing impared?

Dog hear better than people. Hearing dogs are most used in a home setting, but with extra training can work in public. The dogs are trained to listen for certain sounds and to signal their handler, usually by touch. When the dog hears the doorbell, it will touch the handler and go to the door. If the handler doesn't follow, it will again go touch the handler and lead them to the door. Other sounds that are trained are baby cry, oven and microwave timers, alarm clocks and phone ringing. An example is a deaf couple. Both had their own dog. Each dog was trained on one specific alarm clock. So in the morning only the correct person was woken up, the dogs usually paw the chest or lay on you to wake you up. The smoke/fire alarm is a special sound. You don't want the dog leading a handler to a fire, since that is where the alarm is at. Our dogs are trained to lay on the floor and rub their nose to indicate smoke so the handler can choose how to get out safely. When in a public setting, out for a walk or in a restaurant the dog acts as another pair of ears. The handler can look at the dogs head and ears and see where sounds are coming from, our dogs are trained to sit and silent howl when a siren is near, alerting the deaf handler not to walk in a street until they are sure it's safe. Contrary to belief, hearing dogs are NOT trained to bark, as barking is rude in public.

What can a police dog do that regular dogs can't?

The most obvious answer, for me, is that police dogs can respond consistently and quickly to commands. Police dogs also know their chain of command: they are not dominant. Depending on what the police dog has been trained for, they can also detect bombs, drugs, cadavers. These dogs are also trained to apprehend persons (only when told by their handler), and are trained to do so in a way that will not allow for the suspect to sue the handler/police agency.

Can mixed breed dogs help people?

Naturally a dog loves you and remember the dog is a member of a Wolf over centuries the wolf is an ancestor so no matter what breed you have it is in there nature as they become older much older this need declines because they have become more docile. Police dogs are only given a certain amount of years and then the handler either keeps him or her or this dog is donated never euthanized.
