The 1-2-3 (the red line) stops at 42nd Street-Times Square (at 7th Avenue), and the 1 train stops at 66th Street-Lincoln Center (on Broadway).
The 1-2-3 is called the 7th Avenue Line, although it only runs up and down 7th Avenue for a short distance (Christopher Street-Sheridan Square, at West 4th Street, to 42nd Street).
The A-C-E is called the 8th Avenue Line, but it does not stop at 42nd Street-Times Square. It stops at 42nd Street-Port Authority Bus Terminal, one block west of Times Square. There is a pedestrian tunnel connecting the two stations, so you can transfer from one station to the other without exiting the subway system. Nevertheless, they are two different stations.
The A-C-E/8th Avenue Line runs up and down 8th Avenue for the majority of its route in Manhattan, but not all of it (keeping in mind that, although it runs up and down Central Park West for awhile, 8th Avenue and CPW are the same avenue. The portion of 8th Avenue that borders the park is called Central Park West).
Although, actually, the E veers east and goes to Queens after 50th Street, so it's only the A and C that run up and down 8th for most of their Manhattan route.
