I was pleasantly surprised to note that some do. The skink is one of the largest families of related lizards, comprising seventy five genera and six hundred species. Mostly they live on the hotter continents of Africa and the Indian subcontinent through Australia. But one, the five-lined skink, is a small and striped thing (hence the name) and found in the woods of the southeastern United States--an area which includes, of course, the state of South Carolina. http://www.snakesandfrogs.com/scra/lizards/sclizard.htm

If they do they are very rare. I moved here from NY and you smell them all the time and see them dead on the road all the time. I have yet to see a dead skunk or smell one since I have moved down here and that was 2 years ago.
actually 2 types of skunks can be found in South Carolina~contributor
No, they are not, although many people seem to think these lizards are dangerous. The most common skinks in South Carolina are the blue-tailed, five-lined, and broadhead skinks. Many people mistakenly call them "scorpions," and believe their sting is venomous, but herpetologists say that is not true.
