Not if done properly, but there's always a chance of user mistakes, as well as computer glitches, so always backup your data first. In fact, everyone should regularly backup their data!

Many people choose to 'dual boot', which means having Linux and Windows installed at the same time, and then you can just boot into whichever one you want to use.

A dual boot installation that goes smoothly will not erase any data, but again, make a backup to be safe.

If, on the other hand, you decide to delete Windows and only have Linux installed, for many people, this would mean that an installation would erase data, so a backup would be necessary before installing.

Another situation that applies to many people, are those who have multiple Windows partitions, where, for example, one partition would contain Windows and programs, and another partition would contain data, such as music, movies and office files.

In that case, a Linux installation could be guided to overwrite and install on just the main Windows partition, and not the data partition. However, some data is still typically found on a main Windows partition, such as any data on the Windows Desktop and in the My Documents folder. That data would need to be copied over to the data partition before installing.

(Note: I reference locations found in Windows XP. These may be different in later versions such as Vista and Seven)

Always get at least FIVE good opinions when considering major computer modifications, such as installations and deletions! Play it safe!

No special hardware (other than a sound card) is necessary to play MP3 files on Ubuntu. You may need to install additional codecs. Installing the ubuntu-restricted-extras should install most codecs necessary for playback of MP3s. For other types of files, you may need to use the Medibuntu repository.

No. After download and burn the Ubuntu 10.10 install disk, you can either TRY Ubuntu without affecting your Windows at all, or INSTALL Ubuntu to have them both in your PC. However, to install Ubuntu, you need to be careful. Make sure not to install Ubuntu to the Windows drive. That is all.

When you download ubuntu Linux will your original os stay on another user?

Ubuntu generally creates a different partition on your hard drive, formatted with the EXT4 filesystem. Therefore, without special software, you cannot access your files on Ubuntu from Windows. However, you can access your Windows files from Ubuntu without any trouble. When Ubuntu is installed, you get to choose whether to boot into Ubuntu or Windows when the computer turns on. That means that you cannot be actively logged into both Windows and Ubuntu on the same computer. However, you can install Ubuntu on a virtual machine, making the computer run Ubuntu inside an emulator in Windows. This makes it possible to run Ubuntu while you are logged into Windows. I do not recommend it, though. Ubuntu users and Windows users are in different operating systems, so you cannot just switch between them like you can in Windows accounts.

How do you fix computer without operating system without a disk?

You can't. You must have some form of installation medium to install an operating system. Although it is possible to install over a network, it is very difficult to set this up correctly, and you will still need the installation files on another computer. Depending on the operating system in question, it may be possible to remove the hard drive, connect it to another computer, and either image a file system onto it, or run the installer (providing, again, that you have a disk or files). well if you don't have the RIGHT disk you could try Ubuntu...it is free and all you need is a blank CD to make a Ubuntu live CD if you don't have ANY disk I'm afraid you are S.O.L my friend... keep in mind that Ubuntu is a Linux OS not windows so you will not be able to run .exe files on it...you'll have to run tar.gz(i think) files on Ubuntu, and Ubuntu is not good for games, although with the use of windows emulators (such as W.I.N.E.) you can get some .exe files and some games to work

How can you remove wps files from your mac?

I am not a mac user, but to remove any files from any computer, just boot up from a live disc, such as ubuntu, and it will allow you to delete any file you will like, without restrictions. But be careful to not destroy any main operating system components, otherwise you're out of luck, and out of a computer. There are data restoring programs you could use, but that could get rather confusing. Ubuntu is a free operating system that you can order for free off the internet. you don't have to be a certain age, have a credit card, or paypal because it is free. The installation disc is also a live disc. As an alternative, you can also download Ubuntu & burn it to a disc yourself.
