no they just have timing belts no chains

Carb.? Choke not working properly? Fuel injected? Injectors leaking and loosing prime?

it sounds like you have the cam timing and crank timing off by one tooth. you will need to open it up and do it again

There is no such thing as a timing advance wire on a 84 El Camino.
Hey, I had the same probelm with my 84 300zx turbo. The fuel fitler is locates on the far left side of the car under the hood. Just look at your battery and it should be right in front of it. Hope this helps
I have a 84' 300zx turbo with a k&n cone filter, 2.5" exhaust and running 12 psi with a boost controller. In the quarter mile I managed 14.001 sec @101 mph with lots of wheel spin at the start line,my girlfriend managed 13.7sec @ 90mph with no wheel spin. lesson learned, don't spin your tires.

The timing marks on an 84 Ford Straight 6 is on the driver's side of the engine. It is above the crankshaft pulley, attached to the timing cover.
