Yes, I just went in to have mine repaired today and the dealer mechanic informed me that only one light (on right) is meant to be operational.
as per internationl standard cars have only one reverse gear light.

In some cars, the reverse parking light is given only on one side of the tail lamp because the other light is either broken or burnt out. Take your car to the shop to get the light replaced.

From Jaguar. The problem with all Jaguars is the lighting pack so if you get one from a breaker, get the light pack and wiring too.

In the VW Polo Playa there is one reverse light. The second light is a fog light and can be activated by pilling the knob out a notch.
check the wiring to the sensor switch on top of the gear box one is for the overdrive and one is reverse but check all fuses first.
Some of the Beetles never came with a reverse light. My earlier '68 at least did not have one. The present '68 that I own has a reverse switch just above the gear box. Check for wiring or connection faults. If okay, your reverse switch is faulty. If you are having a Beetle that is. ---- Jas
