Potters were important in biblical times, and there are several references to potters and to potter's houses. Zechariah chapter 11 speaks of the thirty pieces of silver paid and then cast unto the potter in the house of the Lord.
The author of Matthew's Gospel was a master at using the Old Testament. In 27:5 he says that Judas threw down the silver in the Temple and went and hanged himself. The priests took the blood money and bought the potter's field, thus suggesting an allusion in the Old Testament. The author of Acts knew nothing of Matthew's story, so provided quite a different account.
