There are no active volcanoes in the UK. There are, however, many mountains which are volcanic in origin. There are a number of extinct volcanoes in the UK and some fairly significant volcanic features. However they all tend to date from a very long time in the geological past.

Some examples include the Borrowdale Volcanic rocks in the Lake District which date from around 450 million years ago. Other examples include Arthur's Seat in Edinburgh which is the glacially eroded remains of a 350 million year old Carboniferous volcano. Another famous example is Giant's Causeway in Northern Ireland which is a basaltic lava plateau that dates from around 50-60 million years ago during the Paleogene.

There are actually some volcanoes in the UK (Snowdonia, Edinburgh, Lake District) , but they are old and extinct volcanoes. This is because the UK is in a tectonically quiet place in the world. We don't live near any fault lines of tectonic plates, meaning that there is little activity because there are no plate collisions.

The UK has several extinct volcanoes, including the Snowdonia mountains, Dundee Law, Edinburgh Castle and Borrowdale Volanics. The last known volcano to erupt in the British Isles was the Ardnamurchan, which is thought to have erupted some 55 million years ago.

There are no active volcanoes in the UK as the country is not currently situated near any continental plate boundaries. Volcanic activity only occurs on these boundaries, where the continental plates move apart, allowing magma to rise up and fill the gap.

No, there have been no active volcanoes in Scotland for tens of thousands or even millions of years. However, there is a lot of evidence of ancient volcanic activity.
