Does the copyrights on the movie Friendly Persuasion mean you cannot have a small group of women from your church come to your home to watch it?

You got that right. Inviting non family members into your home to view copyrighted movies is considered a "public viewing" and is illegal. A couple years back a Boy Scout Troop got fined heavily for showing children orientated movies at a Christmas party.
There is also the disclaimer printed on DVD's that reads something like this:
"Licensed for private home viewing only. Any other use prohibited"
The laws don't change just because it is a church group. Admittedly, it's going to be hard to enforce this, but it only takes one person to complain and fines could be imposed. The copyright laws are in place to protect everyone's rights.
