The onboard computer senses the position of the crankshaft by monitoring the output from the crankshaft position sensor. With that information, and the input from other sensors, the computer can determine appropriate injector duration, ignition timing, EGR valve operation and transmission shift points.

It is used by the PCM to determines fuel and spark timing

What do you do when you get engine code340 and 341 for camshaft position sensor when there is no such thing on a 1998 Saturn SL2?

The 1998 Saturn SL2 will show a code 340 and 341 for a camshaft position sensor because this part is also considered the crankshaft position sensor on the Saturn. The location of the crankshaft position sensor is behind the alternator on a 1998 Saturn SL2. Both crankshaft and camshaft are the same thing This vehicle is not equipped with a camshaft position sensor. Saturn is the only manufacture that uses a auto pulse generated inside the ignition control module in conjunction with the pulse received from the crankshaft position sensor to determine ignition and injection timing. If you have a code for camshaft position sensor the issue is with the pulse generator in the ignition control module.

What is the ignition timing setting for a 1997 dodge ram 5.9l?

The 1997 dodge ram doesn't have adjuastable timing if the. The timing is controled by a crankshaft sensor near the transmission bell housing and a cam position sensor in the distributor. the cam position sensor is uned mostly for fuel injection syncronization. The crankshaft position sensor mainly controls ignition timing and is not moveable/adjustable.

yes

How do I install timing gear for 1995 Saturn SL?

Before you replace timing gear or belt check codes with code reader, may be a crankshaft position sensor. Sensor is very easy repair and L300 isn't going anywhere if that sensor is malfunctioning.
