How do you use your kicker in Texas holdem?
The kicker is used as a tie breaker when two players hold the same hand. e.g. You and I both have a pair of Kings, but you have an Ace with your King and I only have a Jack. Then you win the pot because you have the higher kicker. In Texas Hold Em You count down 5 kickers (because a poker hand only consists of 5 cards) so if we have the same kickers off the board it is a split pot.

How do you determine the winner when both of you have the same pair in Texas holdem poker?
You determine the winner by seeing who has a higher second card. If you have an AK, and your opponent has an A7, and both of you have an Ace pair, then you would win the hand because your K is higher than the 7. If you both have the same second card, then the pot is split.
How can a 4 straight still win against pairs?
Easy: it can't. Maybe your confusion was caused in a game with community cards like Texas Hold'em. Maybe there was a pair on the board, so both you and your opponent had the same pair, but his "4-card straight" won because he had the higher kicker with his pair.
