No, Master Chief is not dead, he is drifting through space somewhere. If Bungie wants to make more money and keep customers happy they would do the best they could to keep him ALIVE.

He is not. they thought he was because alot of the spartans died when reach fell. and the surviving ones went MIA (they were in this shield world thing) but after master chief got lost in space they found the remaining Spartans.

At the end of Halo 3 ( WARNING: this answer contains spoilers if you have not played Halo 3 and wish to.) the Chief and Cortana are seen drifting to an unknown planet after Chief goes into cryo sleep. in other words the game ends with chief surviving and going into cryo sleep until he is needed again, which means he he never died.but then he would die on the planet from lack of food or he would run out of ammo and get killed by something.he doesn't. unless you become MC and kill yourself. >_

The books can tell you, I read one of the books, they died on the planet Reach as it was glassed (bombed from orbit) by the covenant. The master chief was on a space ship (maybe the pillar of autumn) at the time, he saw the planet get glassed. There's a slight chance I'm wrong but I remember it well. Yeah, all but three Spartans (Master Chief, Sam, and another person) were aboard a covenant ship when Reach was destroyed. For the full story, read the book. It is actually really well written.
When did Master Chief lose Cortana To the Gravemind?
Master Chief 'lost' Cortana at the end of Halo 2 when she was required to detonate and activate an explosion. Master Chief needed to leave her behind while he escaped on the Prophet's Ship and returned to Earth. While being stranded alone on the Covenants' 'High Charity' Space Station, Cortana was asked questions by Gravemind and seemingly became brainwashed.
