However the original iPad has no magnets so there is no way to attach the Smart Cover to the original iPad. Some of the magnets play another role, the Smart Cover can wake and sleep the iPad 2 by opening and closing the cover. This is also done with some of the magnets.
I would not try to use the Smart Cover on the iPad, it was not designed for that purpose and would be a poor substitute for a cover better intended for that purpose.
