Which pulls with greater force on the earth's oceans the sun or the moon?

Does the earth have less gravity than the sun and moon?

Earth has weaker gravity than the sun bu stronger gravity than the moon.

Does the sun have less gravity than the moon?

No. Gravity is a function of mass, and the sun's mass is about 27,000,000 times the mass of the moon.

Is the force on the moon due to the earth larger than the force on the moon due to the sun?

If we look just at the bodies and the gravity each has and not gravitational force between any of them, the sun has the greatest gravity. Gravity is a function of mass, and the sun is a monster compered to the earth or the moon. The sun is so massive that it contains about 99% of all the mass in the whole solar system!

Why does the Moon generate larger tidal forces than the Sun?

Even though the Sun is much more massive than the Moon, the Moon is much closer. The force of gravity between two objects is not only determined by the masses of those objects but the distance between them. Because the Moon is so much closer, the effects of its gravity on tidal forces is greater.

Couldthe moon have more gravity than the Sun?

No. The sun has substantially greater mass than the moon, and will always have significantly more gravitational pull.

Why does the moon gravity have a greater effect on earths oceans tides than the sun gravity?

Mainly because the sun is about 390 times farther away from Earth than the moon is. That means that there's about 153,000 times as much force between us and a piece of mass in the moon as there is between us and the same piece of mass in the sun.

Why does the moon have a greater affect on the searths tide than the sun?

The Sun is a million times more massive - but the Moon is 400 times CLOSER than the Sun is. That's why the Moon has more of an effect on the tides than the Sun does. And the math for gravity is based on the sum of the masses, divided by square of the distance between them.

Why does the moon have a greater affect on earth tide than the sun?

The Moon is closer to Earth than the sun.

How does newtons law of universal gravitational apply to earth and the moon?

If it were not for the Earth's pull of gravity the moon would fly away from the Earth. The moon's pull of gravity on the Earth causes the tides.

What has the greater affect on tides the moon or the sun?

The moon causes larger tides than the sun, even though the sun is much larger than the moon, because the moon is tremendously closer to the Earth than the sun is.

Why are solar tides weaker than the lunar tides much of the time?

Solar tides are usually hidden by lunar tides. The moon's gravity is greater than the sun's
