No. The moths fly into the branches to lay eggs, which remain all winter. The caterpillars hatch in spring and are already up the tree ready to eat your leaves.
Additional information:
The caterpillars however do migrate down the tree nightly to hide and return up to feed, or hatch from egg masses laid lower on the tree and initially climb to feed. The aluminum foil would not hinder the caterpillars from their up/down activity. Placing sticky strips around the tree something like the sticky mouse traps would 'catch' them during their up/down activity, until they start crawling over all the stuck/dead caterpillars. A monitoring tool I used when working for a VA county gypsy moth program was to take burlap pieces (12"x24" or so) and put twine around the tree creating flaps of burlap hanging down about chest high. The caterpillars will hide between or under the flaps. Mid-morning you take ice tongs and remove the caterpillars - we counted them - and place in either a jar of rubbing alcohol or soapy water - just a few drops of ivory or whatever you use creates a film on top of the water and they drown. No chemicals involved. The hairs on the caterpillars have been known to cause a rash on some people, hence the ice tongs. Squirrels and starlings are some of the animals that eat the caterpillars.
