I have a 06 GT and just came over Steavens Pass in Washington. Not real impressed with the elevation drive. Your MPG goes down dramatically when you get above 3K RPM. Unfortunately that is what you have to do to keep it at 60 in 5th gear for me maybe 4th for you. Singshot in overdrive at the base and down shift when you get slow enough. I use Premium gas and had 108 octane booster in as well. ******************************************************************** i have a 2005 base model vibe with 5 speed manual transmission. i have driven it over mont eagle pass near chattanooga, Tennessee. i dropped into 4th gear on the way up and used 3rd gear (downshifted from 4th at about 50 mph) on the way down so i wouldn't have to use the brakes as much. this helps prevent overheating the brakes.

When to use overdrive on 93 Nissan Sentra?

if it is an automatic leave it in overdrive. the transmission knows when to change into the overdrive gear. if it is a manual listen to the motor. if you have in overdrive and it bogs down while accelerating then down shift to a lower gear.

When to turn off overdrive in your car?

The overdrive should be switched off when you want to avoid unneccessary shifting. If you are driving on a hilly road, the vehicle will shift out of overdrive going uphill to maintain speed while pulling the vehicles weight up the hill, and shift into overdrive going down the hill to save fuel when additional engine power is not needed. When towing with an automatic transmission, the vehicle may tend to repeatedly shift in and out of overdrive due to the added weight. In scenerios such as these, you should turn off the overdrive to avoid the unneccesary shifting which puts more wear and tear on the transmission.

Should Ford expedition 2001 overdrive be on or off while driving on the street and freeway?

Overdrive is the normally allowed position It won't shift into overdrive until the speed is faster anyway ( on my Ford EXPLORER I have to be doing around 50 miles per hour ) If you are towing something or driving in hilly country where the transmission is constantly down shifting then you want to turn the overdrive off and the OFF light will appear in the end of your gear selector lever

What would cause your overdrive switch to not work on a 1995 Mazda Protege when passing a car and the overdrive switch is off it won't automatically shift down to accelerate?

If the overdrive switch is turned off then the car will not go into overdrive. As it is not in overdrive, then it will not downshift out of overdrive as it normally would. It also will not shift to 3rd gear above a certain factory preset speed. Turn th overdrive on and see if it operates normally.

When driving a stick shift when to you know when to shift up an down shift?

When driving a stick shift, you shift up as the engine begins to rev in each gear. You will downshift as the engine begins to slow.

Is it okay to always drive in overdrive in the 1991 ford explorer?

In normal driving conditions operating in Overdrive is fine and expected. In conditions of heavy loads or pulling something i.e. (trailer) overdrive should not be used. The transmission will shift up and down alot and in turn possibly overheat the transmission fluid creating extensive wear on the transmission.

Do you drive a ford explorer with overdrive on or off?

Drive it in Overdrive when You don't plan on driving fast and jamming the accelerator. Overdrive is like a last gear that helps your truck maintain torque at low RPM. Don't use the Overdrive when trying to go up and down mountains cause it ruins the tranny. I use overdrive a lot but when i get on the free way I'm in drive until im a freeway speeds or with the flow of traffic.

How do you slow down your car while driving?

Press the brakes or down shift

The transmission on a 94 explorer was replaced put it doesn't go into overdrive?

Overdrive is controlled by the shift solenoid, and vacuum modulator. the kick down you refer to is not overdrive but passing gear and should also be controlled by vacuum.

If mercury villager van 1995 is not driving on D while it is moving on R 2 and 1.What would be the problem and the solution?

Your transmission is shot. Have a new one installed with a warranty. Just a side note: if you live in hilly or moutainous area, lock it out of overdrive for local driving. Reserve overdrive for interstate highways. When the transmission has to constantly shift up and down it will wear it out prematurely.

Do you drive your 1997 ford explorer with overdrive on or off?

it depends on where you are driving. If you are just driving around town, you should probably turn the overdrive off, because it will cause the engine to run at very low revolutions per minute, which is not good for it. If you are driving on the freeway, then you should have the overdrive on, because it will save you fuel. However, if you are in hilly terrain, turn the overdrive off, so that the engine will be running fast enough to climb the hills without the vehicle slowing way down. Practice turning the overdrive off just before you start up a hill, and give the vehicle the gas to get its speed up before you get to the hill. This way, you can maintain freeway speeds. When you reach the top of the hill, turn the overdrive on again. Most transmissions today are set up to shift up as quickly as possible, even around town, to make them seem more fuel efficient. I have had a vehicle shift into overdrive at 20 miles per hour, but as soon as I gave it a little gas, it would shift down again, usually a couple of gears. Consistantly driving an engine at low RPM's results in carbon deposits in the engine, fouling of anti-pollution equipment, and poor gas milage. By turning the overdrive off in town, you can help to prevent these effects, and save yourself money on garage bills.

Why does idle down while driving at 65 mph?

More than likely the transmission has gone into overdrive.
