(being divided into opposing groups (opposite forces))

Polarization is the presence or existence of two opposite forces. For example, a magnet is polarized -- it has two opposite poles. The concept of polarization is often used to describe the two opposing sides in the Cold War: the Communist Bloc and the non-communist Free World. The two sides are opposites. The Free World is made up of, for the most part, capitalist democracies. The Communist Bloc is made up of communist dictatorships.

What is a polarized society?

A polarized society is one which has extreme disagreements on at least one important issue. We could say that the US is polarized on the issue of abortion, for example. Many people think that abortion is a monstrous crime which should never be allowed, while many others think that it is absolutely necessary for women to be able to obtain abortions. This is also known as the "pro-life vs. pro-choice" argument. The metaphor of polarization relates to the North and South Poles of the planet Earth; these are geographically opposite to eachother, at the farthest north and the farthest south locations that exist on our world. People with extreme disagreements also seem to be, in an intellectual rather than geographical sense, extremely far apart.
