The term "Dove" referred to anybody that preferred peace over war. The term "Hawk" referred to anybody that spoke aggressively about war. Examples: 1. A man says, "...we oughta bomb North Vietnam back into the stone age!" This man is a hawk. 2. A man says, "...there must be a way of obtaining peace without so much bloodshed." This man is a dove. Note: The statement about bombing N. Vietnam back into the stone age was actually said by USAF GEN Curtis LeMay in 1965. Nixon took him to his word in 1972...with B52s!

Your choices were limited, either to be a "Dove" or to be a "Hawk". A Dove is someone is pro-peace, and believed in the withdrawn of American soldiers in the Vietnam War. A Doves' logic is to fight with peace and words(debates, articles, journalism, etc.) and not to fight with weapons and soldiers. To be a Hawk was to be pro-war, to support the sending of American troops to fight in the Vietnam War. The logic of a Hawk is to fight through war, weapons, and to sacrifice soldiers and government money to win the Vietnam War. People today still reference to the terms of being a "Dove" or "Hawk" but they are better known terms by adults rather then young adults.
