In the Presidential election of 1824, Henry Clay won the electoral votes of only three states: Kentucky, Ohio, and Missouri. Kentucky, usually regarded as a southern state, was his home. Both Ohio and Missouri are now considered midwestern states, but the term did not come into use until the 1880s. If it had been in use in 1824, Ohio would probably have been considered midwestern, since there were already three states to the west of it. However, Missouri at that time was the furthest west state in the country and had been granted statehood only a few years earlier (as a result of the Compromise of 1820, in which Clay played a large part). In 1824, St. Louis and other towns along the Mississippi River, which forms the eastern border of Missouri, were outposts of civilization; beyond them to the west was largely frontier.
