A great example of a Science Fiction introduction is the opening sequence of Star Wars: A New Hope. Writer/director George Lucas uses the scrolling text in space to give us a quick introduction to the unique world we are about to enter, just enough to tease our interest, and then thrusts us into the middle of an interstellar war.

The perfect intro for an essay should be (about) 7 lines.

Let's take an easy sample question: 'Uniforms should be mandatory in all schools'

1. Answer the question ( your stance or opinion)

E.G Uniforms should be mandatory in all school across America.

2. Define the key terms present in the question

E.G Uniforms are matching items of clothing, mandatory is something that must be done. ( in this case, all uniforms should be worn durig school hours and to and from school.)

3. First peice of evidence ( mention it in your intro, it will make up your first paragraph in your essay later.)

- Uniforms ensure that everyone wears the same thing so that they won't be bullied at school.

4. Second bit of evidence

- uniforms ensure that you only pay a set cost at the start of the school year, saving money in the long run because you don't have to keep buying new clothes for your kids.

5. Third evidence

- Uniforms help to promote a good image for the school, and encourage students to uphold the schools name by wearing the uniform.

6. Fourth bit of evidence

- Uniforms are...ok I've run out of good things to say about uniforms but you get the idea.

7. Restate your argument

- Therefore it is evident that uniforms should be worn in schools across America.

TA DA there is your perfect intro for an essay. It also acts as a good skeleton to set out the rest of your essay.

I have always used

The purpose of my research/essay/ is to____________________. By stating this in your first paragraph you set the stage for what you write. It keeps you on target. Many times people rumble on and on about their subject, but this way you can focus on what you want to write about. It has always worked for me.
