Shotguns with the Excel trade name were manufactured by Crescent Fire Arms Co, Crescent-Davis Arms Corp, Iver Johnson Arms and Cycle Works, and J Stevens Arms Co. It could have been made anytime between the early 1890s and possibly the mid 1950s, although you could probably eliminate about a decade from either end of that range. There are a few people who have studied Iver Johnson and Stevens history deeply enough that they could probably date the gun within a few years after examining it for minor features that most of us would be unaware of IF it was made by one of those two firms. The only expert I am aware of who might have been that knowledgable on Crescent products died a couple of years ago.

date
Excel shotguns were made by Crescent, Crescent-Davis, Iver Johnson, and J. Stevens. If it was made by one of the first two, the number probably isn't a true serial number and the exact age cannot be determined. There are a couple of experts who MIGHT be able to place one of the other two into a range of +/- 5 years.
