Your legs are typically some of the most powerful muscles in your body, and most cardio exercise uses the legs extensively. However, athletes who are unable to use their legs often perform cardio exercise in other ways. What's important is that you get your heart rate up. Most aerobic exercises will do this quite effectively. Here are some examples of cardio exercises that do not require use of legs:

  • Rolling in a non-powered wheelchair.
  • Performing a large number of bench presses very quickly with light weight.
  • Pushing and pulling on a free-spinning wheel (like an ab roller) to lift and lower your upper body.
  • While sitting, clasp your hands and quickly touch the floor on each side of you, back and forth, without bending forward.
  • Use a pulley machine (or something similar) and pull cables alternately with each arm as quickly as you can.

Anything that gets your heart rate above 120 beats per minute is considered cardio exercise. If you do not have use of your legs due to a medical condition (or if you don't already do a lot of cardio exercise), check with your physician before starting a new exercise regimen; he/she may be able to offer additional advice on the matter.
