Example: A US Navy Swift Boat (PCF-Patrol Craft Fast) was approximately 50' long, constructed of aluminum, had two engines, armed with three .50 caliber machineguns and one 81mm mortar (lanyard fired), and was manned by 1 officer and 5 crewmen. Swift Boats were part of the US Navy's Riverine Forces in Vietnam (which were part of the US Navy's Brown Water Navy in Vietnam). Under Vietnamization, the Swift Boat would go on patrol with one South Vietnamese sailor exchanged for one US sailor. Next patrol a 2nd South Viet sailor, in exchange for a 2nd US sailor. Third patrol, same. Fourth patrol same. Possibly by the fifth patrol the whole crew would consist of South Vietnamese sailors, except for the officer in charge of the boat, he'd remain USN. On the 6th patrol, a South Viet Naval Officer would take command...now the whole boat is manned by South Vietnamese officers and men. The above was a sample only; actual cases would vary. In some instances 2, 3, or more South Vietnamese sailors might man the boat at one time.

The US Navy was the amongst the first to accomplish it, so that'll be the example:

Example: Definition-US Navy Swift Boat (PCF-Patrol Craft Fast, a fifty foot all aluminum twin diesel engined riverine craft with a complement of 6 men (1 officer and 5 crewmen).

"One US Sailor aboard that Swift Boat is assigned other duties while a South Vietnamese sailor takes his place on the the Swift Boat. Now, the Swift takes to sea with 6 crewmen, but only five of the sailors are US Navy men, one is a South Viet Navy man. A few days later, one or two or maybe even 3 more South Viet Sailors come aboard REPLACING a equal amount of US Sailors. So now, when the Swift hits the open waters it's running with a crew of anywhere from 2 to 3 US Sailors while the balance is 2 to 3 South Viet Sailors. A week or month goes by and the Swift Boat heads out on patrol with NO US Sailors aboard...it's manned totally by South Vietnamese Navy men."
