Best Answer - Chosen by VotersIngenhousz's hypothesis that photosynthesis produces oxygen by splitting carbon dioxide was refuted about 150 years later by the Dutch-born microbiologist Cornelius van Niel (1897-1985) in America. Van Niel studied photosynthesis in anaerobic bacteria, rather than in higher plants. Like higher plants, these bacteria make carbohydrates during photosynthesis. Unlike plants, they do not produce oxygen during photosynthesis and they use bacteriochlorophyll rather than chlorophyll as a photosynthetic pigment. Van Niel found that all species of photosynthetic bacteria which he studied required an oxidizable substrate. For example, the purple sulfur bacteria use hydrogen sulfide as an oxidizable substrate and the overall equation for photosynthesis in these bacteria is:

On the basis of his studies with photosynthetic bacteria, van Niel proposed that the oxygen which plants produce during photosynthesis is derived from water, not from carbon dioxide. In the following years, this hypothesis has proven true. Van Niel's brilliant insight was a major contribution to our modern understanding of photosynthesis

How do you describe carbon and oxygen cycle?

The two processes of the carbon cycle are photosynthesis and cellular respiration. In photosynthesis carbon from carbon dioxide is fixed into carbohydrates. In cellular respiration, carbohydrates are broken down to form ATP and carbon in the form of carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere. The two processes of the oxygen cycle are also photosynthesis and cellular respiration. In photosynthesis, oxygen is produced by the splitting of water and is released into the atmosphere. Oxygen is used in the process of aerobic cellular respiration as the last electron acceptor in the electron transport chain. The oxygen then combines with hydrogen to form water molecules, which can then be used by photosynthesis and the cycle is complete.

How does CO2 get into a leaf?

Through the stomata, openings in the leaf surface. By diffusion. There are three photosynthesis processes, C3, C4, and CAM. (These names describe part of the chemistry.) The desert plants (and some epiphytes) use CAM, for in this process, the stomata are closed during the day, and open at night. The plant absorbs CO2 into its system as a complex chemical (the CAM bit) over night, and during the day, the stomata close and the plant converts the CAM chemical into CO2 to be used for photosynthesis in the usual way. Normal plants open their stomata during the day, and CO2 diffuses in and O2 out.
