A single pitch roof is basically a flat roof with a pitch (or angle), usually to allow water to run off. This differs from a double pitch roof /\ that is what you commonly see.
a gable roof is double pitched with vertical ends
a double pitched roof is called a penis. mwahahaha.

Removing deep snow in layers and removing snow on both sides of a low-pitched roof as you go.

The angle, in comparison to "level".
If the roof is single-pitched then measure down the slope (from high end to low end) in feet and multiply that by the length (in direction of rainwater gutter) in feet = sq.ft. If the roof is double-pitched then repeat above method on each side of the ridge and add the two areas.
A flat roof is a maintenance nightmare year after year. So many people have made that mistake only to later put a pitched roof over the flat roof to avoid any more hassle.
