Lincoln was a leader. People listened when he talked. He rose out of the masses. He was a clever lawyer and soon got into politics. He became a national leader through his debates with Stephen A. Douglas in his campaign for US Senator from Illinois. His words were printed in newspapers all over the country. He was nominated by the new Republican party and elected President of the US.He was elected at an important time. The dispute over slavery came to a head and Southern states seceded from the union leading to the great Civil War.
