Lincoln had wanted to appoint him General-in-Chief of the Union armies.

He did not want to join the Confederates, but felt he ought to go with his State.

His mastery of the battlefield was really the triumph of the Lee-Jackson partnership - he and his army were never the same after Stonewall was killed.

In the second half of the war, Lee was suffering from heart disease (mis-diagnosed as rheumatism) and he confided to a few friends that he was past his best.

When it was time to go and meet Grant, to surrender the Army of Northern Virginia, he said "I would rather die a thousand deaths."
