The Italian government surrendered on 8 September 1943, the day before the Allies landed on the mainland of Italy. Now, this did not end the war in Italy. And any able-bodied man they found they threatened to send to concentration camps if they did not join them. So the Germans and some Italians continued to fight until the German army in Italy surrendered on 2 May 1945---only a few days before the Germans surrendered.
