John Cerminaro, the current principal horn of the Seattle Symphony, is the world's all time best horn player, period. At age 63, he has outstripped all his mentors in terms of longevity and he actually has gotten better every single year. Formerly, he was principal horn for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and principal horn at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, before arriving in Seattle. His greatest CD is probably "A Life of Music" but he has many CDs out there. Nobody does difficult horn work like Mr. Cerminaro. Wikipedia has a nice list under French Horn, but it is outdated in terms of contemporaries.

∙ 12y agoA lot of the old generation of incredible American hornists are nearing retirement age (Clevenger in Chicago, Hustis in Dallas, Meyers in NY, and Cerminaro in Seattle, prev. NY and LA), and we should see a new generation emerge soon (Like Andrew Bain, who just won LA). For players at the absolute top of their game, Caballero in Pittsburgh, Ward in San Francisco, Kaza in St. Louis and VerMeulen in Houston are monsters.
In Europe, Stefan Dohr (Berlin), Radovan Vlatkovich (soloist), Allesio Allegrini (Orchestra Mozart in Italy) and David Pyatt in London are arguably the best.
