Henderson Field. The Japanese had occupied Guadalcanal and begun building this airfield, which was the reason the US invaded the island. If the Japanese had finished the airstrip the airplanes operating from it could have reached northern Australia and could have attacked ships on the way to and from Australia. The immediate objective of the US invasion was to capture this unfinished airfield, which was done the first day. For several months the US made no effort to clear the rest of the island of Japanese, the effort was merely to hold about a ten mile perimeter around the airfield. US engineering troops, called Seabees (from C. B. - Construction Battalions) quickly finished the airfield and it was renamed for Marine aviator Major Lofton Henderson, killed at Midway. Today it is Henderson International Airport.
Tuskegee Airmen
Over 7,000 US servicemen died at Guadalcanal. Contrary to popular opinion, and the Television "History Channel/Military Channel" Guadalcanal episode, which was hosted by retired US Army General Norman Schwarzkopf; Guadalcanal not a "Marine Battle", Guadalcanal was a small Marine Corps action (compared to Tarawa and Iwo Jima), and a MASSIVE US Navy campaign (which was quickly glossed over in the televised segment). Approximately 1,769 US Marines perished on Guadalcanal, and about 420 US Airmen; but close to 5,000 US Sailors died fighting from 27 US Navy warships that were sunk, in histories most savage and furious sea battles, surrounding the Guadalcanal islands.
The Tuskegee Airmen were a group of African-American pilots who fought during World War II.
Tuskegee Airmen .
The Tuskegee airmen were the first African-American Military Aviators to serve in WWII. This was before the time of Dr. King, and the Jim Crow Laws where still in effect. During WWII, the Military, like many branches of the US Government, was racially Segregated. They where subject to discrimination inside and outside of the US Military. They where known for training and flying with Distinction, despite the discriminating times of the 1940s.
Over 1,700 US Marines, over 400 US Airmen, and nearly 5,000 US Sailors perished at Guadalcanal.
The African American fighter pilots who fought in WWII are called the Tuskegee Airmen and they won more medals than any air unit in WWII. If you ever see the movie about them listed on TV it is well worth watching.
