John Cerminaro, the current principal horn of the Seattle Symphony, is the world's all time best horn player, period. At age 63, he has outstripped all his mentors in terms of longevity and he actually has gotten better every single year. Formerly, he was principal horn for the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and principal horn at the Los Angeles Philharmonic, before arriving in Seattle. His greatest CD is probably "A Life of Music" but he has many CDs out there. Nobody does difficult horn work like Mr. Cerminaro. See a review by New York Times critic, Daniel Wakin, on Screamers, Difficult Works for the Horn. Yes, there are others -- Dennis Brain for sure. Wikipedia has a nice list under French Horn, but it is outdated in terms of contemporaries.
A lot of the old generation of incredible American hornists are nearing retirement age (Clevenger in Chicago, Hustis in Dallas, Meyers in NY, and Cerminaro in Seattle, prev. NY and LA), and we should see a new generation emerge soon (Like Andrew Bain, who just won LA). For players at the absolute top of their game, Caballero in Pittsburgh, Ward in San Francisco, Kaza in St. Louis and VerMeulen in Houston are monsters.
In Europe, Stefan Dohr (Berlin), Radovan Vlatkovich (soloist), Allesio Allegrini (Orchestra Mozart in Italy) and David Pyatt in London are arguably the best.
Dennis brain is the most famous horn player. hes AWESOME. but he died in a really terrible car accident
Philip farkas, dennis brain, philip myers. There are more but all those are amazing
Barry Tuckwell and Dennis Brain are my favorite horn players, and are (were) both excellent
Hornists are what French horn players are called. The French horn is a true horn. It's a member of the brass instrument family. The term 'hornist' also is applied to players of basset and English horns. But basset and English horns aren't true horns. They aren't members of the brass instrument family. Instead, they're woodwinds.Players of the Basset horn more rightly may be called clarinettists. The basset horn really is a tenor clarinet. Players of the English horn may be called oboists. The English horn really is an alto oboe.
oh yeah......since there are little people that play the french horn, many scholarships are available to them. (ima french horn playa!) :] oh yeah......since there are little people that play the french horn, many scholarships are available to them. (ima french horn playa!) :]
That is a somewhat subjective judgement, but the French Horn is frequently said to be the mellowest sounding of all the brass instruments.
French horn although some French horns are valved rather than keyed to allow access to the valve with right and left hands
W.A. Mozart and Franz Strauss.
