Their chief Canonicus gave him land that the very religious Williams then named Providence.
He found the religious intolerance of the other colonies too restrictive and founded Rhode Island to provide a place of refuge. He was expelled from the Massachusetts Colony and even lived in Plymouth for a while. Travel was by canoe and boat.
