∙ 14y agoWell, arguably the most famous pirate battle was that of Blackbeard's capture and death off of South Carolina at Ocracoke Inlet on November 21, 1718. Lieutenant Robert Maynard was charged with finding and killing Blackbeard and his pirate crew. Maynard was in command of two small sloops and had the majority of his men hide belowdecks to appear as if they were outnumbered. Blackbeard attacked Maynard and boarded him. Maynard's men then rushed out of the holds to provide an overwhelming 3 to 1 in numbers. Blackbeard and his crew fought brutally and took many an Englishman with them. Blackbeard's death was actually the most impressive. Blackbeard himself engaged Lieutenant Maynard in a swordfight and after breaking Maynard's cutlass the lieutenant shot him. Blackbeard was hardly fased by it and pressed on in his attack before being attacked by yet another member of Maynard's crew. He managed to continue fighting for quite a while and before he fell he had sustained 5 gunshot wounds and over 20 stab wounds. Maynard then beheaded him and hung his head from the bowsprit of his ship.
