It depends a lot on what you want to make with it. I tend to use iMovie HD because I like to have a timeline when I work, and I'm not as interested with importing things from a video camera. If you want easier camera importing and don't need a timeline, the newer iMovie '09 might be better for you. Ultimately the best option would be Final Cut (Pro, Studio or Express) which is more costly but has a lot more features and is more professional-grade.
Imovie. But if you want to get to advanced video editing then Final Cut Pro would be the best choice.

My personal favorite for simple video editing is TunesKit Acemovi. While primarily a screen recording program, I find the program very easy to use while giving spectacular results. I will repeat that Acemovi is not an editing program per se however I have found it very simple to use while allowing me to create amazing videos. This has been my go to editing software for the last several years. Acemovi is not free but cheap.
iMovie is the bulit-in video editing program on Mac. But, the formats which iMovie supported are very limited: 3GP,MOV and MP4. Final Cut Pro is a Non-Linear video editing program for Mac, used by professionals and Amateurs alike

If you have a mac, Final Cut Pro X is a great software which Freddiew uses, a great video editor.
Final Cut Pro for the Mac is very good and Adobe Premiere Pro seems to be very good for windows users. Either one should be great for your video editing needs.
There is a program called iMovie where you can browse, edit and share your creations. It is part of iLife, which is on every new mac computer and comes with iMovie, iPhoto and GarageBand.
Adobe Premiere Pro is a wonderful piece of video editing software for both Mac and PC. It is used by many industry professionals. Final Cut Pro is also great for video editing, but is strictly for Mac computers.
